Every single household in America has a junk drawer. They are usually unruly and are in, or near, the most used room of the home, close to the main entrance. Don’t be shocked, but your favorite professional organiser is telling you it is OK to have a junk drawer. As a matter of fact, I recommend having at least one in every house!

You see, the junk drawer really does serve a purpose. They are like a community area for the most-often used things in the home. Junk drawers tend to get overruled by coupons, papers, notes and receipts. Disorganised drawers can be a big time waster so it’s time to clean them out and take control of your possessions again! But if you have your junk drawer a bit more organised, you can use it to its full capacity. Just give it a bit of structure so you can easily find the things you need when you are walking in or getting ready to head out the door. Here are my tips to organising your junk drawer organised in one hour or less.

1. Buy a snap-on, drawer organiser bin set at Target. They are under $15 and well worth the investment. There are more expensive types at Bed Bath and Beyond, in acryclic. The mesh metal bins at Walmart are great too. But Target’s give the best bang for your buck. And they are all in one package. The different sizes are perfect for all the common things found in junk drawers:
• Office supplies
• Mailing supplies
• Utility items
• Tools
• Batteries
• Small electronics
• Money
• Glasses and glass cleaners
• Hand lotions and lip balms
• Keys
• Rubberbands and twist ties
• Flashlight

2. Go through your junk drawer and weed out the loose papers. Most you’ll be able to toss easily

3. Put a pile of the items that don’t belong in the junk drawer. Put this pile temporarily on the kitchen table.

4. Toss broken items, dried up pens, extra twist ties and random things that are easy to replace.

5. Windex your drawer with a paper towel. If you have liner, use that too.

6. Put in your new bin system in the drawer. The joy of the Target set is you can snap all the little bins together, or mix them up with the longer ones. The longer ones are great for coupons and the smaller ones are perfect for change and lone batteries.

7. Put your junk drawer items now into the compartments.

8. Whatever doesn’t fit, put with the kitchen table pile.

9. Tackle the kitchen table pile after you close your re-organised junk drawer. Obviously you made room in your junk drawer for the important items. So now decide if anything in the kitchen table pile is worth keeping, needs to move into the garage, can get donated, or needs to be put somewhere else in the house. If you have items you are going to sell or give to someone else, make adamant plans to do so.

Whallah! Your kitchen table pile should be cleared and you have a more organised junk drawer.
