Bathroom counter space can be a rarity in any home, with all of the dental and hygiene products essential to our daily, morning routines. For women, it can be even tougher as their makeup collections grow. Where can you put it all and still have an organized bathroom?

Our friend Robin Wilhelm, of Pitt Original Design Systems, is a professional organizers’ best friend. She created these God-sends for the too-small-and-not-enough-shelved bathroom cabinet. Her product is called MagnaPods and they maximize all of your cabinet space, while keeping your often-used items handy.

Made of acrylic, MagnaPods have a strong magnetic backing perfect for bathroom medicine cabinets. In turn, the magnets allow you to customize your cabinet organization as they fit between shelves. Each MagnaPod has internal dividers, making them perfect to hold toothbrushes, make up brushes, tweezers, nail clippers, or tubes of makeup. I always forget to put my finishing mascara on, but with MagnaPods that is no loner an issue. Having items handy when you open the medicine cabinet helps you take advantage of unused storage space. Of course, this in turn takes clutter off the bathroom counter top.

Wilhelm is a native of Glendale, Arizona. Her design inspiration came from her love of cosmetic counter freebies. She needed something to organize the samples and make them easier to use every day. Whallah! Our favorite, prized MagnaPods were born.

MagnaPods have been in organizing catalogs such as, Lillian Vernon, Storables, Get Organized, Organize.com and select Bed, Bath and Beyond stores. Wilhelm and her product have also been featured on QVC.

Think about your bathroom’s appearance. Can some of your favorite items be more accessible with the use of MagnaPods? The benefits are endless and MagnaPods come in a variety of sizes and dividers for just under $10 (before shipping and handling.)

If you would like to learn more about MagnaPods, check out their website at http://www.magnapods.com. Simplifying Your Morning Routine and Organising Your Closet

According to the New York Times, IKEA did a survey of customers in which 31% reported they were more satisfied after cleaning out their closets than they were after sex. Wow. Now I’m pretty sure everyone is not as delighted as I am about organisation. But the stats do have a point about being organised…especially when it comes to getting dressed and out the door in the mornings.

Patty Klochko wrote a delightful book called “Dressed & Out the Door in 5 Minutes or Less” which covers this same topic of streamlining your mornings, how you get dressed, and organising your closet. Unlike other professional organisers and organising TV shows, Klochko’s process does not make you empty your entire closet all at once! In the book, Klochko discusses a life-changing and money-saving system for tracking your wardrobe and making the process of getting dressed simpler. Patty’s tips are unique and down to earth, as her book is an easy read with 125 pages, including indexes. Her book helps you eliminate closet stresses, clutter and chaos and makes getting dressed effortless. Her quotations about women, clothes and getting dressed are delightful and her detailed inventory assessment is a must for every woman’s closet.

Our October De-Clutter Meetup Workshop will be discussing Klochko’s ideas as well as her book. Please order a copy of Klochko’s book and save your sanity, wardrobe and closet at www.DressedIn5.com

If Disaster Strikes Are You Prepared?

September 8, 2009 by Wendy

national-preparedness-2009

September is National Preparedness Month, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In a nationwide effort, we are encouraged to be prepared for a fire, flood, earthquake, and other disasters.  An ounce of prevention saves a pound of cure. So some forward thinking can prepare you and your family for the dreaded “what if.” Here are some starting suggestions for your preparedness this September.

Make room by decluttering

Making room for food storage can be a daunting task if you lack space in your home. Start your preparedness project  by clearing your home of unnecessary clutter. Get rid of all your expired and spoiled foods to see how much actual food you really have to eat.

Do a little more “nesting” now

Carefully analyze your home layout. If you do not have an extra closet or spare storage space, consider buying a free-standing food pantry. It could easily be placed in a room or hallway. Maybe re-purpose a linen closet and place towels and sheets elsewhere. Whatever location you chose, remember it  must be:

  • Cool (75º F or cooler)
  • Dry
  • Dark
  • Pestfree

What’s in your preparedness checklist?

Families should have at least a 3-month supply of food stored for emergencies, financial hardships or natural disasters. Here is a list of recommendations to consider for your emergency preparedness list:

·         Supply of water (one gallon per person per day)

·         Supply of non-perishable packaged or canned food; and, a non-electric can opener

·         Change of clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes

·         Blankets or sleeping bags

·         First aid kit and prescription medications

·         Battery-powered radio, flashlight and plenty of extra batteries

·         Credit cards and cash

·         Extra set of car keys

·         Family physicians contact list

·         Listing of important family information (like serial numbesof medical devices such as pacemakers)

·         Special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members

Have a family chat

Speak to your children’s school about their shelter-in-place and/or evacuation plans. If your family’s cell phones were inoperable, determine how you would you get in touch with each other. Make sure everyone is on the same page, and talke about what family meeting place you would use and who would be the best,  out-of-town contact.

Ever since the September 11 attacks, Americans have been increasingly aware of the importance of being prepared for any kind of emergency. Planning ahead and even working with a professional organiser can help you and your loved ones prepare for emergencies. By taking the time to get organised you will be able to more effectively deal with any kind of emergency situation.

Start Getting Home Mail Clutter under Control

August 1, 2009 by Wendy

mail-manThe average American receives 568 pieces of mail annually, and 49,060 pieces of mail in their lifetime; one third of it is junk mail. . Tax dollars spent to dispose of junk mail: $320 million.

Sad facts indeed! But there are steps you can take to get your paper clutter and mail organised and in order. Here are three simple, but important decisions your home needs to make to move forward on mail clutter :

Determine one person, who will be the designated “mail person”

Determine and stick to one pick up time daily, for your daily mail deliveries (this can be someone besides the “mail person”)

Determine, set and stick to only one designated location in your home to do daily “washing and ironing” of your home’s mail (hallway, garage, office)

Junk Mail Help

July 25, 2009 by Wendy

mail-in-the-mailbox

Computers were supposed to make us a paperless society. But in actuality, we are seeing more paper in our homes and offices than ever before. The average American receives 568 pieces of mail annually, and 49,060 pieces of mail in their lifetime; one third of it is junk mail. And get this, the average American will spend eight months alone in his or her life, just handling junk mail!

Let us help you enjoy the real things in life. Here are some tips to help eliminate your junk mail.

·                     Reduce the number of catalogs you are receiving by tearing off the name/address label and mailing it with a ‘please remove me from your list’ note to the catalog.

·                     To remove the amount of junk mail you receive, write to:
Mail Preference Service, DMA, P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008
Include your name and address and a request to be removed from any list.

·                     Stop the pre-approved credit card offers by calling Trans Union at 1-888-567-8688. They have options to remove your name for two years or permanently. They share data with Experian and Equifax so you won’t have to call them to make the same request.

·                     Valpack sends regular mailings full of coupons. Call and ask to be removed from their list: 1-800-237-6266. You can also fill out a letter, staple it closed, add a stamp and address and mail.

·                     Publisher’s Clearinghouse sends sweepstakes promotions. Call and ask to be removed from their list:  800-645-9242

·                     Visit Catalog Choice. Fill out online registration form, indicating which catalogs are not wanted. No charge at:  http://www.catalogchoice.org/

Now THIS is how you organise wine!

wine-storageI drink wine on occasion, but when I saw this, I thought “THIS is how you organise wine!” This bookcase ladder has a mini bar, with a drawer. Not only is the design simple and sleek, but you can also see your wine inventory. It has a nice rack to hold all the different type of glasses; and, is perfect for a corner of the dining room. There is ample shelving for a few knick knacks (not too many so it doesn’t look cluttered).  Assembly is required and it can be found at Crate and Barrel for under $500.

What does it mean to be organised really?

lme-head-only

So what does it mean to be organised? Being organised is more than just being neat, and having things tidy. It’s about finding what you need, when you need it, where you need it …or use it for that matter.

So if you always take your shoes off in the first floor home office, and that is the last place you always go on your way out the door, you should probably have a closed cabinet shoe storage area in that office.  If you always open your mail in the garage, every day, then you should have a shredder and mail sorting system in the garage.

When you are better organised, life is easier. You don’t have to hunt all over the place looking for things. You have the tools you need, when and where you need them. You wouldn’t want your wardrobe on the 1st floor, if you always get dressed in your master bedroom on the 2nd floor, would you?

Organising does take time, but the benefit outweighs the chaos and stress of searching for things. Being organised means you have permanent homes for everything, so there is no question where something goes.

My favorite item to organise your garage

June 17, 2009 by Wendy

garage-bicycle-rack

The garage is the most under-utilized space in the American home. Has your garage out of control, with dangerous groupings of toys and fertilizer next to one another? Are you short on space for other supplies? Well, quite often the garage is the storage of the home busting at the seams. One way to free up precious garage space is to use the ceilings and walls.

If you store bicycles in your garage, chances are you store them on the floor, taking up tons of room. Stack those space-hoarding bicycles with a simple stacker stand.

The good folks at Garage Envy have this model and you can purchase it online on their website at http://www.garageenvyshop.com/gravitystand2bicycles-2.aspx

The one I personally own was purchased at Organised Living.
